    The Master of Science in Education (MSE) program and its curriculum has been specifically created for experienced educators who want to continue on their journey as highly effective teachers and build personal and professional skills. All coursework contains job-embedded assignments and, therefore, requires candidates to teach a consistent group of learners. The program is also designed to help candidates become proficient in five program competencies (outcomes), which are based upon national and professional standards for practicing teachers. Candidates are taught to consider how to most effectively promote student learning and development and school achievement, and demonstrate their understanding of the program's four knowledge goals: assessment, academic content and pedagogy, diverse learners, and professional responsibilities and relationships.

    Accelerated B.S. in Professional Studies to M.A. in Teaching and Learning

    Work toward your Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies while focusing on the subject area you would like to teach and simultaneously completing two core courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching. This accelerated option is designed for high-potential undergraduate students interested in the field of teaching and who want to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree. The accelerated option allows you to earn your Kaplan University Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies and Master of Arts in Teaching at a faster pace and lower cost than completing each degree separately. You will enter a shortened version of the master's degree program, if you successfully complete these courses with a minimum course grade, and have applied and been accepted to the Kaplan University Master of Arts in Teaching. The accelerated option is subject to eligibility requirements.

    M.A. in Teaching - Outside Iowa

    Pursue a career path where you can make a difference, one student at a time. Kaplan University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is also designed for those individuals who would like to become certified teachers through the alternative certification route approved by their state. The non-certification track consists of a minimum of 42 quarter credit hours and is designed for professionals from all 50 states and abroad who desire a fundamental understanding of secondary teaching practices, but may not wish to become certified teachers at this time. This program is designed to help prepare individuals with a bachelor's degree in a subject other than education to become qualified secondary teachers in grades 5–12. Kaplan University cannot recommended candidates outside of Iowa for licensure, but does have MAT coaches dedicated to helping students plan their own path to certification in their home state.† Enrollment in content area courses is also not required for completion of this track of the program. The non-certification track is structured around courses designed to build a strong foundation in teaching and does not include fieldwork or a student teaching/internship experience.

    BS in Secondary Education: Business Education

    The Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education is designed to prepare students for careers in middle schools and high schools. The Secondary Education program is a degree offered by the College of Education in conjunction with the College of Liberal Arts for students desiring to prepare for a career in teaching in grades 7 - 12. Students/applicants are responsible for contacting their state department of education for certification requirements and program approval. Courses are taught by experts in their respective fields who share knowledge and experiences in the areas of educational psychology, reading strategies, teaching methods, assessment, classroom management, and curriculum development. The student/applicant should consult the Grand Canyon University Catalog and academic advisor to obtain information regarding current policies and procedures inherent in a teacher credentialing program.  All courses are directly aligned with the Arizona Professional Teacher Standards and the Interstate New Teacher Support and Assessment Consortium Standards. Opportunities are provided to apply concepts, theories, and research throughout the teacher preparation program. Assignments within many of the courses guide students through observational experience practicums, and the final semester of the program includes a full-time, 16 week student teaching component. Content areas are available in: Business Education, English, Mathematics,and Social Studies.

    BS in Elementary Education/Special Education (Dual Major)

    Grand Canyon University's Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Special Education (Dual Major) is designed for any individual who wishes to seek a elementary or cross-categorical teaching certificate to teach children with special needs in the K-12 setting. The format and courses of the state and regionally accredited program are tailored to meet the needs of the adult learner and to maximize strengths that the teaching candidate already possesses. Courses are taught by experts in their respective fields who share knowledge and experience in areas of learning disabilities, behavioral and emotional disabilities, and other physical and cognitive impairments. Opportunities are provided to apply concepts, theories, and research throughout the program. Assignments within each course guide students through observational and practice-based experiences. Teacher candidates must have access to a K-12 special education classroom to complete the program assignments. Graduates of the program are prepared to work with special needs populations and implement individualized educational plans to accommodate the students' various learning, behavioral, and social needs. Teacher candidates must be prepared to complete a full-time, 16-week student teaching component at the end of the program. Eight weeks of student teaching is completed in a resource room, self-contained class, or in a special school for students with disabilities and 8 weeks is completed in a regular education setting. These special education settings must include at least 3 or more of the following disability categories: emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, mental retardation, physical/health impairments; and they must be completed with a certified special education teacher. Teacher candidates are responsible for contacting their state department of education for certification requirements and program approval. It is a degree that leads to teaching in an elementary or a cross-categorical K-12 setting.

    Master of Education: Teaching - Reading and Literacy

    The Master of Education: Teaching - Reading and Literacy program provides a strong, research-based background in professional teaching practices and promotes the development of teachers who are knowledgeable of the developmental characteristics of students as readers and writers, the foundations and theoretical basis for literacy education, and the instructional practices that best serve them. The coursework reflects standards advocated by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and the International Reading Association (IRA). The program is designed for teachers who wish to further their studies by achieving an advanced degree with a focus in working with students to promote reading and literacy development. The program includes a total of 36 semester hours and is comprised of 12 online courses with experiential PK-12 fieldwork components, including a capstone course in school-based action research conducted on a school or other approved professional site. While allowing for a master's level credential, this West Virginia state-approved program does not lead to certification in Reading and Literacy.

    Master of Education: Teaching - Secondary Social Studies

    The Master of Education: Teaching - Secondary Social Studies program, in alignment with the West Virginia 21st Century standards for teaching social studies, encourages the development of teachers who can assist students to work independently and collaboratively using critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to develop civic responsibility for the 21st Century. The program provides professional education courses at the graduate level, although students found deficient in a particular content area may need to complete additional undergraduate courses in order to meet state content requirements. Candidates will complete both a master's degree and be eligible to receive certification through the state of West Virginia in Secondary Social Studies. The program  is designed for  post-baccalaureate students who wish to teach students to understand the political, geographic, economic, and social world. Should candidates not complete co-requisite course requirements, they may still complete the Master of Education: Teaching – Secondary Social Studies degree, but may not be eligible for a West Virginia teaching certificate. Applicants are encouraged to submit their official undergraduate transcripts for review prior to starting courses. The Secondary Social Studies program also includes fieldwork and student teaching on school sites. All courses other than the student teaching are offered online. This West Virginia state approved program is aligned with National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC),  National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.

    Master of Education: Teaching - Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

    English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

    The online English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement focuses on instructional methods, curriculum, and teaching materials that promote the use of English to help students achieve academically in all content areas. The program provides teachers with the training in effective education for teaching ESL students. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. To pursue this degree, students must have a Bachelor's degree and a standard teaching certificate. For 2009-10, resident graduate tuition is $198.25 per credit hour; non-resident graduate online tuition is $323.75 per credit hour (fees are additional). This program is a 21-credit hour graduate supplemental endorsement approved by the Nebraska State Department of Education. 

    Graduate Certificate in Advanced Teaching & Curriculum
