The Associate of Science in Medical Assisting degree program's ultimate goal is to prepare students to successfully gain entry-level employment as a Medical Assistant. This program will give students an introduction to the overall operation of the physician's office is the basic objective of this program. Students are trained to to perform routine laboratory procedures and to handle financial records, assist the physician in the examination room, correspondence, insurance forms and other administrative functions.

Associate of Science in Clinical Medical Assisting
The Clinical Medical Assisting program at SJVC program provides specialized training for employment in medical offices and medical specialty clinics. The curriculum includes theory and practical applications in clinical medical procedures. Topics and applications in the following subjects are included in this program: human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical clinical procedures such as vital signs, injections, patient care, venipuncture and electrocardiograms, emergency procedures, health histories, instrument set-ups, and instrument sterilization.Well trained clinical medical assistants are in demand in private practice medical settings, clinics, laboratories and hospitals. You will learn and gain skills in: computers skills & concepts, medical terminology, pharmacology, emergency procedures, medical laws & ethics, HIPAA compliance and regulations, venipuncture theory, patient charting, and vital signs theory. You can expect to qualify for a variety of positions such as: medical assistant, lab assistant, EKG assistant, occupational health assistant, and medical secretary.Earn your Certificate in just 8 months and go on to finish your Associate of Science Degree in Clinical Medical Assisting. The first academic year focuses on the specific career skills you'll need to work in a doctor's office. Giving you a competitive edge in the job market, the second academic year provides general education courses tailored to your chosen career field.Graduates earn Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification.Graduates also earn a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to sit for the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam, offered by American Medical Technologists/Allied Health (AMT), and the National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) exam, offered by the National Center for Competency testing (NCCT).
BA/Health Care Studies - Medical Records
Demonstrate your knowledge and skills to provide quality service in the health care industry and earn your Bachelor of Arts in Health Care Studies degree. Your fundamental understanding and experience in basic principles and practices of medical record keeping such as knowledge of HIPAA, state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations, as it pertains to client confidentiality will combine easily with your studies of the US health care system, as well as medical ethics and law culminating in a well-rounded degree. Personalize your Bachelor of Arts in Health Care Studies degree when you pair it with a transfer concentration. You can transfer up to 12 approved credits of Medical Records coursework to qualify as your concentration in the Health Care Studies degree program.
Associate of Science - Medical Office Administration
This program is designed to teach you how to work closely with doctors to organize and monitor patient care services. In short, you will be a vital part of the healthcare team in a physician's office, a clinic, a hospital, a long-term care facility, or other medical office. Medical Office Administrators perform administrative duties in a medical office or clinic, reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. You will help with communicating with patients and other providers, code physician diagnostic comments, billing insurance companies, and orders, and more. You will only take courses that pertain to your success in the workforce at Virginia College. Do not worry if you are not already skilled in the areas below. That is why you are coming to school! Employment opportunities include all physicians' clinics, offices, med-checks, and virtually any healthcare setting.
Diploma in Advanced Medical Assisting - Medical Specialty Track
The Medical Specialty Track is designed for highly qualified vocational healthcare students, nurses and other ancillary care providers. Medical assistants can find jobs in physician offices, clinics, nursing homes, hospitals and emergency rooms. These students will also gain experience with up to 456 clinical hours of hands-on clinical externships across five primary care medical specialties and medical billing and coding.
